Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a condition in which menstrual type of tissue occurs outside the womb.
These areas bleed each month during the woman’s period and their accumulative build up of blood leads to adhesions, cysts on the ovaries (chocolate cysts) and subfertility.
The symptoms of endometriosis include:
- Menstrual pain
- Heavy periods
- Painful sexual intercourse
- Brown discharge between periods
- Sub fertility from tubal and ovarian damage
The diagnosis can be suggested by a pelvic ultrasound and confirmed by a day case operation called a laparoscopy. Treatment by surgery can remove the deposits of abnormal bleeding tissue from the pelvis and remove adhesions which bind organs together.
Hormonal treatment with a Progestagen or a Mirena IUS can be tried before and after surgery.
The aim of the treatment is to restore painless periods and normal intercourse and to promote fertility.
