FIBROIDS
Fibroids are hard lumps of white tissue that grow in the uterus (womb). They may be single or multiple and can arise inside the womb cavity, the wall of the womb or on the outside of the womb.
They may be symptomless or cause the following problems:
-
A large lump in the pelvis
- Pressure on the bladder or bowel
- Heavy periods with clots and pain
- Subfertility
They are usually diagnosed by ultrasound scan and if causing problems can be removed by surgery.
A myomectomy is the name of the operation that can be done to cut out and remove the fibroid lumps. Embolisation is a procedure offered in specialist centres.
If the fibroid has grown inside the womb cavity it can be resected or cut out operating through the vagina and cervix (neck of the womb). Fibroids can recur if there are many present and older women may consider the removal of the womb which is a hysterectomy. Fibroids usually present by causing pain and heavy bleeding.
